Brow Commission Candidate: Only Demo GOTV Can Save Him

BY BUDDY NEVINS

For former Democratic Broward County Commissioner Ken Keechl, its like sitting in your jail cell waiting for your execution.

Keechl’s fund raising has lagged and he has approximately $44,000 in the bank as of last Friday, September 19.

His opponent Republican County Commissioner Chip LaMarca is sitting on a whooping $362,000…unspent and waiting to be thrown at Keechl.

The LaMarca vs. Keechl race is the only commission campaign where a Republican has a chance. LaMarca snatched the District 4 seat away from Keechl in 2010.

Keechl can only hope that this time around his Democratic registration will do what it didn’t do four years ago — win the day.

There is some validity to that theory, said Jim Kane, a Browardbeat.com pollster.

“Party ID still counts,” Kane explained.

District 4’s voters are registered roughly 40.5 percent Democratic, 32.1 percent Republican and the remaining 27.1 percent independents and members of minor parties.

Republicans in the district, which stretches largely east of Interstate 95 in Northeast Broward, tend to vote in larger numbers in Off Year Elections.

Keechl’s success will depend on getting every last Democrat to the polls.  That job is pretty much out of Keechl’s hands.

The D’s Get-Out-The-Vote effort is being run by Democratic gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist and the Broward Democratic Party.

Facing all that Republican money, Keechl is on Death Row and praying for that last-minute reprieve.

Only this reprieve won’t come from the Governor.

It will have to come from state Democratic activists….who unfortunately haves a terrible Get-Out-The-Vote record in Off Year elections.

Part of the Democrats Get-Out-The-Vote effort will take place Saturday in Deerfield Beach:

  1. F. G. says:

Ken Keechl has no reason to vote for him other than he is a Democrat.

  2. Agreed says:

I agree with #1 and so did 72% of the voters in the primary. The Dem primary in August had a poor turnout but those hardcore voters who voted did so overwhelmingly for Keechl.

Remember Ben Lap was a hard working, well educated and a well spoken candidate with good ideas. He was endorsed by Rep. Hastings and his campaign was run by Judy Stern and Eric Johnson. Lap raised $30,000.00. He was no slouch

Besides all that Lap had going for him, friends of LaMarca financed a hit piece against Keechl. Depsite all of the above, Keechl still took 72% of the primary vote. One thing for sure, of those Dems that do come out, Keechl has name ID and associated clearly as a Dem.

Remember LaMarca, the self appointed Republican Minority Leader of the Broward County Commission has to pull D’s and I’s to win. Not an easy task.

    FROM BUDDY:

Theoretically, LaMarca could win by pulling enough independents.

  3. Agreed says:

True. Look at 2010, the independents went with former Dem Candidate Chiari just enough for LaMarca to win without a majority. Sadly for LaMarca, Jason Steele the African American NPA candidate failed to qualify which could have pulled I’s and some of the black vote expected to go for Keechl.

    We shall see.

  4. Broward says:

    Buddy,

How does the Sheriff of Broward County in full police uniform legally post his picture on campaigning/political advertisements while being paid by Broward Taxpayers. It is illegal for the Sheriff to do any politicking/campaigning in uniform.

  5. Mutual benefit says:

Keechl has a bad record. Remember when he spent campaign funds on himself and paying his partner rent? And his involvement with convicted felons in the Viatical Ponzi scheme Mutual benefits. I think his law partner went to prison on that one. Keechl has a lot of baggage

  6. Sam The Sham says:

Good luck to Keechl if he is looking for help from that crowd.

Terry Scott is a community laughing stock. Scott Israel has the charisma of a bowl of over-cooked noodles. The community is pretty much done with do-nothing Gwendolyn Clarke Reed. Mitch Caesar seems pretty bored with his job and can barely make the effort of just showing up.

  7. No checked baggage says:

    Yeah chip has no baggage….

    Chaz do you agree?

  8. Chaz Stevens, Genius says:

LaMarca earned himself a campaign finance complaint.

I posted it on my blog.

  9. Margate Democrat says:

Can you imagine the Republicans falling for “hey guys, make me your governor, I’m really one of you.”

Democrats believed it so much they didn’t make Charlie Crist debate his primary opponent. The former democratic leader of the Senate.

Such is the disrespect democrats show for women and their own party members. They threw Nan Rich off a cliff to help fix an election for Charlie Crist. Who could have even imagined such a thing a few years ago?

State party leaders went so far in a primary as to deny Nan Rich a debate. Why? Because Rich might expose Crist for not being a real democrat.

Try just for a moment to get your arms around that logic. I can’t, and what accounts for this latest of Charlie Crist’s political party change?

    Shhh, that’s that’s secret.

We’re not supposed to ask that question. It’s rude. Just be a good democrat and vote the way you’re told. All you need to know is Crist is better than the other guy.

    Well, I’m not so sure.

All he’s done is make me feel ashamed of my party’s state and local leaders. I feel ashamed as a woman and as a democrat.

So I won’t be voting for governor this November because I just can’t bring myself to support either of them. Part of me actually hopes Rick Scott wins. One because I don’t think it will make a difference and second it might help get rid of the local and state democrat party leaders who have sunk to such depths I no longer recognize my own party.

  10. Ghost of McLovin says:

regardless of party affiliation, Chip has been a better candidate and better commissioner than Ken. Chip is tireless, attends all civic functions he is invited to (not just during campaigns) and is one of the few fiscal checks and balances on that commission. Ken did little during his stint, other than cost the taxpayers money

  11. Wally & Pepe says:

Not even sure why Keechl ran this time especially since he and his husband went to the trouble of moving to a district they didn’t even live in so he could? LaMarca is everywhere, all the time and has been for the last 4 years in the district he has grown up in and still lives in. Keechl has spent the last 4 years as a lobbyist. You can tell by his demeanor that Keechl is phoning it in this time… he doesn’t want it so why should he get it?

  12. Chaz Stevens, Genius says:

Chip has no baggage? Ha! Chip’s baggage is factory third Chinese knockoffs; instead of Coach, he has couch.

What do you call his taking out a $350K open line of credit (2nd mortgage) and not making a single payment — all the while making 6-figures in taxpayer salary. How do you even remotely consider that financially responsible?

Have you ever stolen $100? Let alone $350,000?

Chip did … he’s doing that right as we speak, all done so he can drive around in a leased BMW — his infamous EN VINO.

LaMarca is a factory third tea-partier who doesn’t follow their core concepts of:

    * Deficit spending must end.
    * Bailout and stimulus plans are illegal.

If you borrow/steal $350K from a lender, with no intention of repaying it, instead you will go the foreclosure route, how is that not personal deficit spending and a bailout?

A vote for LaMarca is like being pro-blowing Donkey Balls.

  13. Lamberti Part Deux says:

Loving the L&L pisans, Lamarca and Lamberti.

Like Lambertt, Chip has been to every ribbon cutting and event in the District. His facebook and twitter posts confirm this. Of course it is easy since Chip doesn’t have a real job and has not paid his mortgage in 4 years. If I remember, Lamberti was a big star on facebook and twitter as well, where is he now?

Like Lamberti, Chip is trying to rebrand himself as a non partisan “citizen advocate”. I remember Lamberti doing the same thing, saying people don’t care about party affiliation when it comes to Sheriff. Al was wrong and that is why he was seen this week at Il Mulino with a gun in his waistband and a set of handcuffs in his belt trying to pretend he is Sheriff in exile.

For those, not Chip’s paid shills, if you want to learn about the real Chip LaMarca read the stories below.

  14. Chaz Stevens, Genius says:

    Thursday, September 11, 2014

    State of Florida
    Florida Elections Commission
107 West Gaines Street, Suite 224
    Tallahassee, Florida 32399-1050

    Dear Sir or Madam:

The purpose of this complaint is to highlight the apparent violations of the Florida Constitution (Article 2, Section 8), Florida Statutes (§§ 99.061, 112.344, 112.3145), and the Rules of the Florida Commission on Ethics (Chapter 34-8) by a candidate for Broward County Commission, Chip LaMarca.
As you are aware, the Florida Constitution requires a candidate to provide a “full and public disclosure of their financial interests.” Fla. Const., Art. D. Section 8.

Having reviewed various financial interest forms filed by Chip LaMarca (“Financial Disclosure”), it is apparent that he has not provided a full and public disclosure in accordance with state law and Commission rules.

    He’s a liar.

    To wit:

    1. Using the most recent Form 6 (2013), as of 12-31-2013, it would appear LaMarca leases one vehicle and still owns his infamous “EN VINO “Jaguar. I opine LaMarca neglected to list the lease payment as a Part C liability.

    2. In 2013, while everyone’s home value went up, we’re to believe LaMarca’s toney Lighthouse Point residence lost $200k in value. Coincidentally, that matches the value listed on the Broward Property Appraiser website.

LaMarca lists the foreclosed debt value at $386,191. This boggles the mind since he’s in foreclosure (LaMarca’s a chronic deadbeat bill payer), the note’s amount would have increased on the interest alone. Reviewing the May 2011 foreclosure complaint statement, the balance owed was $395k.

    3. 2010/11 Form 6 Part B (assets) lists a 49% ownership in LaMarca Construction, yet LaMarca neglects to complete Part E, therefore obfuscating his ownership’s details.

    4. Same thing goes again in 2012/13 with LaMarca listing the construction company, but failing to provide Part E.

    5. As a sitting Broward County Commissioner, LaMarca is paid via direct deposit, yet before 2013, he intentionally omitted any personal banking information.

I’ve included all the necessary forms for your consideration.
Taken together, Mr. LaMarca’s reporting errors and omissions constitute a clear failure to substantially comply with the requirements imposed on him by the Florida Constitution, Florida Statutes, and Commission Rules. I trust that these matters will be thoroughly investigated and that Commission will apply appropriate sanction to Mr. LaMarca for his failure to comply with your rules, statutes and Florida’s Constitution.

  15. Chaz Stevens, Genius says:

    About Chip:

Two words sums him up, “His sucking-Dale’s-schlong stance on Lauderdale Lakes.”

I know corruption, and there’s plenty of it in Lauderdale Lakes, and for years LaMarca’s response has been to snuggle up to Holness.

Name one of Chip’s controversial or courageous stands. Who amoung us would say, “You know when it comes to politics, Chip LaMarca’s got some big balls.”

There are broads up on his dais with hairier nut sacks.

I’m not the biggest fan of Ken (vis-a-vis Terry Scott), but Keechl voted for the south runway and courthouse. Gutsy decisions that may have led to him losing to LaMarca. But at least Keechl showed some courage.

  16. Ha Ha Ha says:

@9 – Your viewpoint is understandable – I voted for Rich also – but what you also need to understand is that this is not a South Florida election. It’s a statewide election. That means all the people who live in “Lower Alabama” and “Lower Georgia” get to vote, and they will only vote for a Blue Dog Democrat or a Republican. Given the tight polls between Scott & Crist right now, it’s very important that you do vote and that you vote Democrat for Crist.

Rick Scott is the Tea Partier who is destroying Citizens Insurance, to the great detriment of South Florida. Rick Scott is a hard-core enemy of women’s rights (reproductive freedom, etc.). Crist absolutely will be a much better Governor, and your vote this November is very important!

    FROM BUDDY:

Please remember that Charles Crist won Broward over Nan Rich by 77.15 to 22.85 percent. He won the state by 74.4 to 25.6 percent. Another words, Rich did worse in her home county than statewide among Democrats.

  17. Local Guy says:

The problem with Chaz “The Genius” Stevens, aka The Athiest, is that he does not check his facts and ultimately looks the fool every time.

  18. Chaz who? says:

Please Chaz, you have gone after Chip for years and failed miserably. Keep it up,
Commissioner LaMarca is too busy being a great Commissioner to even read your bs.

Chip has stood up for Gay rights and stood up to those libs on the Commission against Obamacare voyagers and raising minimum wage.

So Commissiner LaMarca went into foreclosure, so did a lot of people who owned homes during the recession. You didn’t because you live at home.

One thing for sure, Commissioner LaMarca doesn’t give you a second thought and no one else does either. MAOS, what a joke.

Why do you only go after the few good Republicans like Homan, Daley, Powers and LaMarca if you claim to be a Republican. Loser!

  19. Kevin Hill says:

From a purely political science/statistical standpoint, #2 above is correct.

In a vacuum, Keechl should be more likely to win than LaMarca. Notice I said “more likely” and not “guaranteed;” just more likely than not.

The $$ difference, however, is important as long as LaMarca spends it effectively.

Of course local elections are not held in a vacuum.

    Kevin.

  20. Chaz Stevens, Genius says:

    Dear Chip;

I just heard from a mutual acquaintance, a local Deerfield Beach businessman, that you’d like him to broker a sit down, an ASAP face-to-face meeting with me to clear the air.

    Are you baked?

No really, are you higher than a fucking kite?

I want to meet you why?

Where have you been during the Lauderdale Lakes ordeal? And now, at the 11th hour, with Keechl’s polling numbers showing a lead, you want to put out the fire by the name of MAOS?

Blow me. I’d rather pleasure myself with a cheese grater than chat with you.

Oh wait … and besides that, don’t forget the fact I rarely meet, never take sit downs, and really don’t have much to discuss with you.

    Much, as in nothing.

What would you hope to convince me of? Your stellar voting record? Your impeccable ability to manage your finances? How you’re good for the county?

I’m thinking you’re finding yourself boxed in … can’t go too far right or too far left, and if you stand still, you find me right there, banging away.

The panic must be starting to set in.

I also hear you were none-to-pleased with my PERFECTLY TIMED email delivery of my complaint, done while you were standing on the tarmac with your fellow Commissioners. How’s that for embarrassment? I also heard your dead-beat-billing-paying ways came as some surprise to a few standing next to you that day.

‘Cause that’s how a fucking Genius such as myself rolls.

One final note … You might want to tell your paid shills I have those text
messages, before they get all up and start saying this is bullshit.

So that’s about it, boyo. I’ll let my buddy know I’m not interested in meeting with you.

Nearly forgot… I’ll be issuing a presser next week … that’s sure to make your grimace.

Oh, and have a good day.

  21. Chaz Stevens, Genius says:

Yeah bro, I failed so miserably that Chip wants to meet.

Some say failure, I say Holy Fuck We’re Taking On Water…

  22. Chaz Stevens, Genius says:

Yeah, MAOS is a nothing. Going to break 1MM visits this year and we’re much ado about nothing.

During Festivus 2013, we have 2MM views during a 3-week period, so that must just have been a mistake.

  23. Hollywood Veteran says:

@16: There are more registered Democrats in Florida than Republicans. A lot of Democrats I know feel exactly the way the writer from Margate does. Many of us will be staying home that day.

  24. maos is a louse says:

Get a life Chaz, Chip is a good man who has done great things for the District. I have been a fellow parishioner of Commissioner LaMarca for years at St. Paul’s and proud to call him a friend. People like you are all alike, just live to tear down good people or worse Catholicism. Your disrespect of the birth of Christ is as low as it gets. You are nothing but a loud mouth, classless, coward. Luckily,no one reads your blog of lies about Commissioner LaMarca and he will get reelected with ease over that abomination Ken Keechl

  25. The Guess Who says:

I’m virtually certain that “read it on my blog” is the essential equivalent of saying “I live with my parents and can’t get laid.”

  26. Ha Ha Ha says:

@22 – But many of those Florida Democrats are DINOs (Democrats In Name Only). That means those of us from the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party have to outvote the DINOs as well as the Republicans!

Past history showing inadequate voter turnout by progressive Democrats is exactly what resulted in the conclusion that Rich couldn’t succeed. To stay home is to become personally responsible – PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE – for causing the very problem Margate Democrat complains about!

  27. Chaz Stevens, Genius says:

  28. Bob Adams says:

Chip LaMarca has represented his district well. That certainly cannot be said for Ken Keechl when he had his chance. His arrogance reared its ugly head within weeks of taking office. Keechl represented only himself! Some in the Republican party have had fits for the past four years because Chip votes his conscience, not his party. How many Democratic County Commissioners marched in the Pride parade? Do I hear any names? NO, not a one! This gay Democrat is proud to support Chip LaMarca!

  29. Michael Putney tomorrow says:

Hopefully Michael Putney will see Chaz’s recent stories on the Broward Post and ask Chip about it when Chip and Keechl are on This Week in South Florida tomorrow at 1130 on Channel 10.

  30. Lamberti is a Criminal says:

    Lamberti belongs in JAIL.

  31. Lamberti is a Criminal says:

Lamberti should have been arrested for open carrying of a firearm. HE IS NOT a law enforcement officer. I will call the real police if I ever see he doing that.

  32. Chaz Stevens, Genius says:

    >> How many Democratic County Commissioners marched in the Pride parade?

That’s a terrific reason to vote for Chip. Fuck his voting record, his skeevy ways, his personal financial Armageddon, let’s give Chip another chance ’cause he’s … what? Pro-gay? He likes to power-walk? He looks good in pink?

He walks in a parade, therefore he gets your vote? That’s the extent of your voting-metric?

    Simple-fucking-ton.

I’d be willing to bet, if you asked Ken Keechl, he’d also admit to be pro-gay and willing to walk in the Pride Parade.

Shit, I’d be willing to walk in that parade. Can I count on your vote in 2018?

I’d also like clarity of the statement “Chip represented his district well.” Apparently, you’re not from around those parts.

Personally, I don’t think stealing $350,000 from a lender a good representation of our values.

Vote for Chip cause he doesn’t make any mortgage payments, even though he makes a six-figure salary? Is that one of the values folks in NE Broward believe in?

  33. Chaz Stevens, Genius says:

During our research of Chip LaMarca, the lone Republican sitting on the Broward County Commission dais, and his ongoing $500,000 residential foreclosure, we closely audited his personal financial disaster in the hopes of answering this question, “How does an elected official, making a 6-figure salary, find himself a half-million dollars in the hole?”

The answer, we found, was a fairly common refrain — LaMarca has been living off the equity pulled out of his house. Known as “re-fi churning,” these are non-IRS-declared funds; if you will, it’s off-the-books income.

Eventually, and unfortunately for LaMarca and his EN VINO bar tab, that note will come due, but until then, he’ll keep kicking the can down the road.

A look at his public records revealed:

    * 09-10-1994 purchases a house in Pompano with $121,600 borrowed
    * 12/16/1999 sells his Pompano house for $183,000
    * 12/21/1999 buys a home in Lighthouse Point with $240,000 borrowed
    * 3/19/2001 pulls $50,000 out in equity
    * 10/01/2001 refis for $240,000
    * 02/05/2003 refis for $234,800
    * 07/31/2006 opens a $385,000 revolving line of credit

Ah, so, there’s the genesis of his problem… In 2006, Chip launched the First National Bank of LaMarca. And like others with a decent credit history, lenders, hungry for interest payments, are more than willing to convert your residence into a personal ATM.

Fast forward to about four years ago, where we find Wachovia’s successor, Wells Fargo bank, starting foreclosure (Lis Pendens) proceedings.

    Queue the screeching halt.

With those proceedings now delayed a year, we wonder if like so many other mortgages, was LaMarca’s loan bundled into a CMBS, chopped, traunched, and then ‘sold’ to investors? Perhaps Wells Fargo can’t get their hands on LaMarca’s deed, so the foreclosure remains in limbo.

Then again, maybe LaMarca’s lawyers are gaming the system (deny, delay, defer is the first thing you learn in law school), plus unlike Federal Courts where the Judge controls the docket and motions, in Circuit Courts, attorneys can file numerous motions to kick court action down the road. When borrowers owe that much, or worse, are seriously upside down, lenders are slow to take action because at least the property is occupied, the utilities are getting paid, and they wait it out — all the while documenting any ‘loss’ on their balance sheets.

On a tangentially related item, Lamarca likes to say he’s in the construction business, but he is neither a licensed construction entity, nor holds a state contractor license.

  34. Phney says:

Chip voted for the county commission resolution and said in his comments, I am supporting this resolution because I want to see a fast resolution in the court. To this day chip has never said I support gay marriage. Also when the tea party handed out anti gay flyers at brec after the parade he had no comment and refused to criticize them.

  35. Chaz Stevens, Genius says:

I asked the quetion, “So Chip, you say you have three people working for you or then again, you say you have 20 people working for you. Which is it?”

    Answer: neither.

LaMarca, during a filmed interview by the S-S Editorial Board, indicated he has ZERO employees and does the consulting out of this home.

    ZERO. Not three. Not 21.

ZERO, as in the number of mortgage payments he’s made since assuming office back in 2010.

What else have you lied about Chip?

A vote for Chip is a vote for a liar.

    #EpicFailure

  36. Chaz Stevens, Genius says:

Ready for a laugh? The following is an excerpt from Chip LaMarca’s official Broward.org biography.

Chip is truly a great American success story. After attending Broward College and later Boston University, Chip returned to Broward County and followed in the footsteps of his late father, helping to bring jobs to Broward in the construction industry. After establishing himself as a knowledgeable and trusted manager and supervisor and after 20 years of experience in the construction industry.

A truly great American? I must have missed the memo that lowered the standards required to be “a great American success story.” Since when did stealing $350,000 from a lender become something to brag about?

In addition to all that blather, LaMarca actively promoted LaMarca Construction and its services (here, here, here, here, and here). We opine LaMarca, who has never been a licensed Florida contractor, illegally advertises those services (here, here, here, and here), all while not having a business license from Broward County and Lighthouse Point.

Editor’s Note: LaMarca Construction changed its name to LaMarca Group on April 3, 2013.

With Chip being Chip, the bullshit continues with hyper-inflated claims of employing 50 people, all the while not carrying worker’s compensation.

LaMarca leaves the Lighthouse Point City Commission for this job. He’s 42, and owns LaMarca Construction, specializing in large-scale power generators. He said his company, which employs three people including himself, would not work for any local government, even as a subcontractor.

Three people? 50 people? Which is it? With so many lies, it’s hard to keep them all straight.

We managed to secure LaMarca’s standard client contract … and we’re really bothered by the fact he’s advertising for services he cannot legally provide. In his own words, LaMarca Construction “specializes in turnkey fuel systems”, which in the State of Florida requires a license, which he lacks.

We opine LaMarca is violating Florida Statute 489.127, and given this, we’re in the process of filing a complaint.

    (1) No person shall:

    (a) Falsely hold himself or herself or a business organization out as a licensee, certificate holder, or registrant;

    (f) Engage in the business or act in the capacity of a contractor or advertise himself or herself or a business organization as available to engage in the business or act in the capacity of a contractor without being duly registered or certified;

  37. Ghost of McLovin says:

you’re getting ponderous Chaz – the message is getting lost as usual, no matter how great the message is

  38. Oppps says:

The bloom is off the rose, yesterday.at the Sun Sentinal, LaMarca had to admit the LaMarca Construction has no employees, he runs it out of his house and is a consultant.

I find it interesting that despite the boom in news construction and jobs Chip claims to have created his construction company seems to be floundering and added no new jobs.

LaMarca has bragged about all his employees, 50 on LinkedIn, and how hie is someone who is an example of a successful small business owner, which we now know as a lie. If he lied about this can he be trusted about anything else
