Will West Broward House Seat Be Eliminated?

BY BUDDY NEVINS

Former Weston Commissioner Dan Stermer dropped his bid for state House this week and will instead run for mayor of Weston.

Stermer’s withdrawal has renewed questions whether the seat will be eliminated during redistricting next year.   Broward must lose a state House district.

Sands was a Stermer supporter.  For that reason, it was assumed he would defend the seat in Tallahassee from elimination.

Without Stermer running for the seat, Sands may let the district be abolished.

Stermer made his decision after Mercedes Henriksson ended her mayoral campaign.

The city election to replace Mayor Eric Hersh, who must leave office because of term limits, is in November, 2012.

The decision leaves two Democrats running to replace term-limited state Rep. Franklin Sands, D-Weston – Louis Reinstein and Richard Stark.

District 98 includes the Bonaventure area of Weston where Sands lives and the Democratic parts of Sunrise and Plantation.

I wouldn’t worry about the seat being abolished since those who live in district 98 will still need representation. It may become district 97 or 96 or spit between both. And both are open. Martin Kiar is running for State Senate and Ari Port is term limited. The race is still on…

  2. Wow Pow says:

The Weston representative has been a joke. Susan Goldstein. Roger Wishner. Need I say more. Franklin Sands. How is that Maddof thing going for you? Who the fuck puts all their eggs in one basket?
It will be cut up and Weston will be divided.

  3. Weston says:

Please tell me what Dan Stermer ever did to deserve being mayor other than be on the city commission. Are we better off in Weston today than we were 10 years ago?

  4. Weston says; doesn't do says:

Why complain about commissioners and mayors in the city? How many nave been elected with no opposition? So why aren’t you running?

  5. Ryan says:

It wont be eliminated. Most talk up here in Tallahassee is that 97 will become a hispanic-majority seat and eat into west pembroke pines and miramar, while 98 will become a Davie, Sunrise, Plantation district with a bit of Weston.

  6. The Times of Sands says:

Forget the district. Eliminate Franklin Sands. Get rid of him from politics.

  7. Senator John Blutarsky says:

Stermer would rather be elected to a local position so he can get himself back onto the MPO gravy train
