Super Lawyer Skip Campbell Running Again!

BY BUDDY NEVINS

Broward legal powerhouse Skip Campbell is running again statewide.

Let’s hope the result is better than when he lost the Florida Attorney General’s race in 2006 to Republican Bill McCollum.

Campbell has mounted an aggressive professional campaign among lawyers to be the next president of the Florida Bar.

His opponents are also legal heavyweights– John “Jake” Schickel of Jacksonville and Gwynne Young of Tampa.

Schickel is a specialist in worker’s comp among other things.  He’s with Coker Schickel.

Young is a real property probate and business law expert with Carlton Fields.

Campbell, of course, is one of the personal injury legal kings of South Florida.  A former state senator from 1996-2006, his firm is Krupnick Campbell.

All three candidates are currently members of the Bar’s Board of Governors.

Check out Campbell’s video here. Its just part of his campaign, which includes ads in the Bar Journal and a professional website.

Of particular interest to me is an article reprinted from a legal website as part of Campbell’s campaign. It quotes Campbell as saying he was inspired by former Sheriff Ed Stack to get into politics.

Campbell cleaned the pool at Stack’s Pompano Beach motel and was later a chauffeur for Stack, a Republican who became a Democrat after Watergate. Stack was a political pioneer — one of the first Broward pols to recognize the voting power of the condos.

Political trivia:  Stack served one term in Congress, beating incumbent Republican J. Herbert Burke. Shortly before the election, Burke had pleaded guilty to disorderly intoxication and resisting arrest after being picked up drunk in the Dania Beach strip club, the Centerfold.  The incident was later featured in Carl Hiaasen’s book, Strip Tease, which was made into a movie with Bert Reynolds playing the part of  the congressman.

The campaign stretches over a few weeks with voting by mail.

Wasn’t he already the President of the Florida Bar before? Sometime in the early 1990’s?

  2. Watcher says:

Skip is a good guy in court and around… a lawyers lawyer…Ms Young is talking about the places where lawyers bring “justice” at a questionalbe price, like PIP suits where lawyers with 5 years expeience get $350 an hour to fight over $150….. should be interesting

  3. Las Olas Law says:

Skip is one of the best lawyers I have ever seen. His political connections are needed at this time when the Bar is under attack by the Legislature.

Skip is a class guy who will do a lot for the profession. He’s got my vote.
