Sen. Smith: On Ballot By Petition In Just Five Days

BY BUDDY NEVINS

State Sen. Chris Smith has collected 1,500 signatures to get his name on the ballot for County Commission.

That is roughly 400 more than was needed to fulfill the requirements and avoid a filing fee, according to Smith.  He announced on Twitter that he gathered the signatures in five days.

Smith, D-Fort Lauderdale, is facing incumbent County Commissioner Dale Holness for the Broward County Commission District 9 in Central Broward.  The race already has divided the African-American and Caribbean-American political community, as two of the best known black office holders duke it out in next year’s Democratic primary.

There are three largely-unknown Democratic candidates in addition to Smith and Holness:  Milagro Canizares, McKinley Williams and, strangely enough, Robert “Chris” Smith.  Holness has already raised $149,100 for his campaign.

All observers expect this one to be expensive, noisy and bloody.

Here is Smith’s tweet:

  1. Mr. Smith goes to Broward says:

    Congratulations Commissioner Smith!

  2. Bye Bye Dale says:

And Chris Smith is going to win BIG.. Dale Holness is useless – He has been sticking his nose is other peoples campaigns and now he is going to get a taste of his own medicine!!

  3. Broward Voter says:

Holness can get that many signatures just as quick if he has all of his children and baby mammas gathering signatures.

  4. John Henry says:

1500 mindless lemmings continuing the cycle of mindless voting based on the physical characteristics of a candidate.

  5. The Guess Who says:

Money is still on Dale to win this seat. It will be an expensive mud slinging fest.

  6. Count LF Chodkiewicz Chudzikiewicz says:

As much as the Black community knows State Senator Smith has always been trying to get decent economic development going in Fort Lauderdale and Broward County, let us not forget he has, like Congressman Alcee Hastings, always been open, encouraging, and an ally of the Jewish community and the Jewish residents of both Congressman Hastings’ District and State Senator Smith’s District. I hope the State Senator wins his race, Heaven knows I shutter everytime Broward County Commissioner Holeness comes up with an idea – always something to guard against!

  7. Joan Moore says:

Go Chris Smith. Holeness is trash.

  8. Broward Voter says:

Does anyone know if Holness has paid his back property taxes?

  9. City Activist Robert Walsh says:

The district is quite diverse. Its not only ‘The Black Elite”-you know what I’m talking about the black political in crowd. Smith allies( some blacks and others that support him). What Dale needs to do is concentrate on the other population in the district. The district has pockets not just around Sistrunk etc. but he has pockets in Middle River Terr and also what is it Lauderhill etc. Emphasis should be on what Holeness has done for the entire district. He has major support w/ the Caribbean community these demographics inc. above mentioned will seal his deal to victory. Concentrate on the grants , concerns that you have championed Dale. Don’t worry about Comm.Holeness if Smith and his comrades play dirty Dale can play just as dirty. Good luck Comm.Holeness. I like him….

  10. Chaz Stevens, MAOS says:

    Walsh;

You’re like the Rainman of bad decisions in life.

Just when you think … no way he can’t … whoop, there it is.

  11. City Activist Robert Walsh says:

Whoop there it is-your fat ass. I can’t stand this guy. Yes, I am better than you, yes….

  12. Dale got to go!!!! says:

Since Dale took office as a County Commissioner the district is going in reverse. The area look worst now then before he took office. If you can say Int’l trade a Commissioner agenda. We must pick the best candidate.

  13. Smith Goes Down! says:

I wonder if Senator Smith will discuss his do nothing record in the Senate; he was ABSENT for the recent redistricting vote impacting the state; he led the charge to not allow body cameras for police; he leads a secret life in Tallahassee that will be exposed. Chris Smith will loose and he will be a non-factor for Alcee’s seat soon.

  14. tell the truth says:

Comm Holness has 6 properties on bcpa.net and five have tax certificates for the taking/buying,+/- $1,000 ea.

  15. Count LF Chodkiewicz Chudzikiewicz says:

I have heard many things about people in Tallahassee, but never anyone having a “LIFE”, let alone a “Secret” one! Maybe “Smith Goes Down” was taking about another Tallahassee in another State or Country? And really, if State Senator Chris Smith had a “secret life” in Tallahassee – wherever – why would he run for a Broward County Commission seat that is in FORT LAUDERDALE – not exacting “near” his “secret life” in Tallahassee! I mean the comment is obnoxious, low class, alien to decent people if not an illegal attempt to intimate a candidate.
Once again Dale Unholyness and his crew prove no gutter is too low for them!

  16. Talks like a politician says:

    @ 14
Are Holness and Bobbie Grace, Vice Mayor of Dania Beach brother and sister?? Bobbie plays the same tax evasion game. It is amazing that they both have decision making responsibilities in spending other peoples’ tax dollars. And both names appear on Democratic cards at election time year after year. Coincidence?
