New Charges For Former Brow Demo Official

The Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office slapped six new charges this week on former Broward Democratic activist — Corey Alston.
The new charges filed against Alston are four counts of grand theft, one count of grant theft over $20,000 and one count of aggravated white-collar crime.
He had already pleaded not guilty to other charges of grand theft and various corruption charges.

Once an up-and-comer among black Broward Democrats, Alston ran a losing race for state Senate against incumbent Mandy Dawson a decade ago. Coincidently, Dawson was later charged with corruption.
Alston was also the former treasurer of the Broward County Democratic Party’s Council of Club Presidents, an umbrella group for the leaders of party’s two dozen or so party clubs.
He is also a former student member of the Broward School Board.
Alston, 35, lives in Lauderhill.
He resigned as the South Bay city manager in February after being accused by prosecutors of plotting a scheme to pay himself $25,139 for unused sick time he was not qualified to receive.
He is also accused of transferring city money to his retirement account.
All this occurred in one of Florida’s poorest cities, which was facing a financial emergency. The city, snuggled against the shore of Lake Okeechobee, was hard hit by the mess Alston left.
An audit released three months after Alston’s departure discovered that the city had paid for $30,000 in personal credit card charges for him.
It was also found that $122,000 was spent on consultants without the permission of the city commission, $6,000 for lunches and parties, $900 in gifts of flowers, and more than $17,000 on a credit card used by someone who no longer worked in the city.
Corey Alston’s brother, Torey Alston, ran a losing race for Broward School Board in 2012. Torey Alston was formerly an aide to County Commissioner Barbara Sharief.

This is typical of another Sheriff Israel advisor. Corey worked on teh Sheriff’s campaign. This is the third close advisor this week in trouble with arrest records….
