Judge Hurley Gets Help From GOP Chair

John “Jay” Hurley

BY BUDDY NEVINS

John Hurley was a Republican activist until he was appointed to the bench.

Now that he is a “non-partisan judge seeking re-election, there are Democrats and Republicans supporting him.

But one name sticks out on the invitation  for last week’s fund raiser Chip Lamarca.

Lamarca is chairman of the Broward Republican Party.  He is not a lawyer.

Another non-lawyer GOP activist is Rebecca Stoll, a North Broward Hospital District commissioner.  Her husband Steven Stoll is a lawyer.

The rest of the bunch are the usual donors to judicial campaigns Democratic insider Larry Davis, a lawyer involved with the judiciary; Clerk of the Courts Howard Forman, a Democrat; Bailbonds king Wayne Spath and a whole slew of lawyers.

Here is the invitation:

  1. Local Repub says:

So, what is wrong wit an individual supporting a great judge like Hurley? Chip gives of his personal time and efforts as a City Commissioner, as well as a concerned citizen. Why are you identifying him for being a non-lawyer? Don’t you think that the legal community might have been the reason why three other well-qualified judges were voted out last time?

FROM BUDDY: I don’t see anything wrong with Chip supporting Hurley. I never wrote there was anything wrong with the endorsement.
From everything I’ve heard, Hurley has been a great judge. He deserves more support! Why isn’t Democratic leader Mitch Ceasar’s name on the list?

  2. say no to activist judges says:

    an activist allright….

  3. In the Know says:

Soon to be former judge Hurley will never win his election. He came in dead last.

  4. anon says:

Wow I remember that YD banquet all those years ago. I didnt hear the exchange between Fleisher and Hurley but it was all anyone could talk about that day.

knowing the relationship between Randy Fleisher and Ceaser I am sure Mitch would have gladly been on the host committee and gave money, lol.

  5. Broward Democrat says:

Hurley is a very big R. He received a paltry 10% of the vote in his last election with Sam Fields and Marcia Beach. Adios Hurley. Can you say “Practice law again?” Enjoy it while it lasts. You are so cooked.

  6. PolyAna or AnaSue says:

Budster, Tell your friend to take a polygraph or sue New Times if she feels she is right. A success in either endeavor will lead her to the path of righteousness, forgiveness and most importantly, believability.

  7. Las Olas Esq. says:

    Buddy:
I agree that Jay Hurley has turned out to be a great judge. I’ll bet that the Republican and Democratic lawyers like him equally. In fact, a quick review of the host committee above shows many more Dems than Republicans.
On a side note, for an otherwise likeable person there seems to be a few Dems on your blog who are angry and hate him like poison.

  8. Very Easily Beatable says:

No, Las Olas, it’s just an unfortunate fact of life for Hurley, whether he is a good judge or bad judge, is a very beatable judge. History is proof in the puddin’

  9. vince mcmahon says:

any support group w/ a con man like red roberts/mike brannon on it is a joke.this guy ripped off senior investors 30 yrs ago of 2.8 million dollars and is ripping off taxpayers today w/ the toll bridge he runs on the backs of taxpayers w/ his 7 minute evals that are written only w/ what the person who is paying wants; whether it is the sao or the defense.he is so beholding to satz&co that if anyone speaks against the sao he renders them emasculated w/ some bogus diagnosis. look at what he did for GRADY, outpatient help for a sicko when anyone else would have gotten his in patient rec so he he can get his stipend from the many tx centers he refers to.people seem to be intimidated by him b/c he could trow another man around, get some guts and shut this charlatan down

  11. vince mcmahon says:

mike brannon/red roberts’ evals and “educated opinions” are as FAUX as his AKA and his moves in the wrasslin ring.he flat out LIES to protect SATZ, throwing innocent people under the bus or in some type of confinement. Just look at his letterhead, THE INSTITUTE!!!! Since when does 2000 sq ft and one partner make an institute. This guy needs to refresh his knowledge of the DSM IV and all the diagnosis that fit him: delusional, grandiose, schizo, multiple personality disorder etc. Get those red tights out RED, every good run comes to an end, your con game in the court house is closing down soon.

  12. Blowhard Buster says:

Dear In the Know/Broward Democrat/Very Easily Beatable:
Stop posting over and over and over about Hurley.
    Put up or shut up.
Open your wallet and run against him.
According to you he is a push over.
I am sure that Hurley won’t raise money from all over the state and the fact that his name and face are on the tube twice per week won’t matter.
    Just keep talking…

FROM BUDDY: You’ve got a very good point on the TV exposure. Hurley is the judge on the bench when most of the bad guys make their first appearances in court. So when someone gets arrested for a high-profile crime, Hurley is the one on the TV news. He gets a lot of broadcast face time.

  13. Ironhorse says:

I would suggest that “Very Easily Beatable” “In the Know” and “Broward Democrat” are one and the same, with an obvious personality clash with Judge Hurley.

I have to admit that Judge Hurley has turned out to do a great job on the bench. His name is on the television some times as many as 3 nights a week. That type of name recognitions takes a ton of cash to beat in an election.

Most of the lawyers I deal with respect his rulings as a matter of law and appriciate his candor. A review of the host committee clearly shows and equal balance of D’s and R’s.

Whomever is on this blog bad mouthing him, clearly has a personal issue with him. Said lack of candor can not be based upon his rulings. I would suggest that one should stick to the relevant legal issues of his rulings. Please close the cake hole on personal issues, for they have no place here.

  14. Merit Appointment says:

The only realistic way to balance the bench with diversity and talent is to stop electing judges, because they can’t really run for office in any traditional sense, and go to a merit appointment system like most states have. Judges are too important to our society to be playing these games. Grow up Broward, grow up Florida. Get with it we are way too far behind the curve.

  15. Very Easily Beatable says:

    Okay Blowhard Buster, you’re on

  16. Ironhorse 2 says:

Dear “Very Easily Beatable” “In the Know” and “Broward Democrat” :
While you are making your campaign plans Google (news) “Hurley, Leyritz”. Or check out the front page of the Sunsentinel, Miami Herald, and Palm Beach Post websites. Try going to the front pages of the sites for all of the local media. Then wait until Saturday morning and look at the front pages of the above-mentioned papers. Count how many times that Hurley’s name and face appear on those sites between friday and saturday. Also, count how many times you hear “Judge Hurley” on television outlets (including ESPN), between friday and saturday.
One more thing, tune into the weekend sports talk shows and wait until you hear Judge Hurley.
Report back on monday as to how many places where you heard or saw his name.
Explain the foregoing to your therapist next week.

  17. Ironhorse 2 says:

and…add FOX News, NBC, and HLN.

  18. Very Easily Beatable says:

Ironhorse / Ironhorse 2 / Blowhard Buster / Local Repub / Las Olas Esq.
Stop posting over and over about Hurley. You are naive. Ask any voter when they leave the voting booth “what’s a hurley” . They might say “it is the leather covered ball used in hurling” Then, ask the same voter “what’s a Goldstein” and they will reply
” not sure, but I just voted for one”. G before H = 4%. Okay, the leather covered ball gets 23%. That would be a large improvement over the 6% in his first run. Keep dreaming

  19. you need to let go says:

your first post said Hurley got 10% when he ran, now you say 6%. i don’t think that your numbers are close and i think that out of malice, you know that.
do you just pull the numbers from your backside?
why do you even take the time to keep spewing your disdain for Hurley.
okay, we get it. you don’t like him, he is a wimp, pushover yada yada yada.
we’ll find out. you are either a great prognosticator or an envious anger filled weasel who tries to take shots at an otherwise well liked judge.
we get it. he ran ten years ago, came in third so he can never win a race for the rest of his time on earth and you have the numbers (whatever they are)to prove it.
but why don’t you take up a hobby or learn to play bridge or just do something useful with your time?
    just a suggestion.

  20. Catwoman says:

Judge John Hurley is a good man. Republicans will bring America back! Common sense will prevail. Thank you judge Hurley! 🙂
