Gunzburger Gets Union Endorsement

BY BUDDY NEVINS

Broward County Commissioner Sue Gunzburger has won a big union endorsement.

Locked in a race for re-election against former state Sen. Steve Geller, Gunzburger won the nod from UniteHere! Local 355.

The union represents hotel, food service, airport, casino and laundry workers.

Geller has gotten several fire fighters union endorsements.

Early union endorsements are notable because under Labor rules, they require the unanimous support of the board of directors.

Here is the endorsement:

ENDORSE COMMISSIONER SUE GUNZBURGER FOR RE-ELECTION

(HOLLYWOOD) – UniteHere! Local 355 the local South Florida affiliate of the large national UniteHere! labor union which represents hotel, food service, airport, casino and laundry workers endorsed Broward County Commissioner Sue Gunzburger (D) for reelection in 2010.

“I’m proud and honored to receive the endorsement of the working men and women of UniteHere! Local 355, said Gunzburger.

Gunzburger has been a champion on the County Commission on behalf of working families.

Over the years she successfully fought for Broward’s adoption of the living wage, health care coverage for workers, gender equality in the workplace, domestic partner benefits, and many other improvements that helped working persons and their young children.

“Your commitment to working with the men and women of Broward County has made a positive difference in their lives, wrote UniteHere! in their endorsement letter.

UniteHere! is affiliated locally and nationally with the AFL-CIO.

  1. Waste of Endorsement says:

Why would they endorse Gunzburger? She opposes the runway expansion which directly benefits UniteHere’s members. It’ll be interesting if Gunzburger changes her vote on that, that’ll show that not only can she be bought by campaign dollars but apparently endorsements as well.

Maybe they endorsed Gunzburger for her vote to use 1.1 million of taxpayers money to reimburse developers for the convention hotel.

Either way, it seems the endorsement goes against the needs of the members of UniteHere! It’ll be interesting to see if Gunsburger’s votes start to change.

Please people, let’s clean up Broward so we are no longer the embarrassment of the State of Florida. Vote for Steve Geller so we can get some real leadership for once!

  2. Tommy the Fry Cook says:

Unite Here is NOT affiliated with the AFL-CIO. Don’t you people read the newspapers?!? They’re GOING to be re-affiliated, but it’s not in effect yet…at least not that’s been reported. That’s why they endorsed Gunzburger now while they’re still a rogue union. Gunzburger’s votes mean millions of dollars to their members, so of COURSE they’re going to support her. They’d be stupid not to.

Every other union endorsed Steve Geller, so Gunzburger is losing the “working people” endorsements about 100-1. As more slime gets revealed about the School Board and County Commission, I’ll be surprised if none of it comes back to expose GUnzburger. With all the rampant corruption that’s gone on, if you’re an 18 year incumbent, it means one of three things:

    1. You’re part of it
    2. You knew about it and did nothing
    or
    3. You’re too clueless and oblivious to hold elected office in the first place.

Whichever of the three applies, Gunzburger needs to be a GONESburger.â™

  3. Buckle Your Seatbelts says:

Endorsements aside, Geller is an un-indicted conspirator who has just not been caught yet.

At least Sue has not been lining her pockets like Geller has, using his connections to fatten his wallet (and belly).

He is a self-serving pig of a man and will LOSE this race.

  4. Truthiness says:

Every other union endorsed Steve Geller, so Gunzburger is losing the “working people” endorsements about 100-1.

Actually this totally false. Geller has the firefighters. Gunzburger has UniteHere. No other unions have endorsed to date in the race. By my count, that would be 1-1.

As for corruption, nothing has ever even remotely touched Gunzberger ….. but you cannot say the same for Geller. He has a lot of explaining to do in the Mutual Benefits ponzi scandal. I cannot wait until Steigner FBI tapes eventually get released and everyone gets to hear the real Steve Geller.

  5. Out with the old says:

Geller has explained himself and is not under investigation. Other than giving stieger the name of three lobbyists, Geller has nothing to with it.

At least Geller makes his own decisions. Everyone know that sue gunzburger is a puppet to Bernie Friedman. Talk about lining pockets, look to see where all of gunsburgers campaign money comes from, most of it comes fom Bernie Friedman and his clients. Look to see how she votes, mostly in favor of Bernie Friedman and his clients. Plus everyone knows that her son Ronnie tells her how to vote, she often seen consulting with ron before votes.

As far as sue lining her pockets by using her position, all I’m going to say is bus benches.

Let’s elect someone who has a proven track record of getting results delivered to south Broward, let’s elect steve Geller!

  6. Blue Man Scoop says:

Tommy the Fry Cook lays out the Lamack argument. I tend to agree with him, however in this case it could apply to both Geller and Gunzburger.

  7. Bob Adams says:

Hey, “Waste of Endorsement” if you haven’t figured out yet that Sue Gunzburger can’t be bought you’ve had your head in the sand (or maybe somewhere else) for a lot of years!

  8. Who Cares says:

Was a time when unions had clout. They ain’t got bupkis anymore, what’s more seeming too close to the unions is a one-way ticket to not getting elected these days.

Firefighters cut a deal with whoever will pay them. Cops too. All unions are whores. They couldn’t give two shits who runs our communities so long as they get raises.

So none of this fazes me. I’m voting for who I think will be the most honest. Show me something there and I’ll pay attention.

  9. Yea, Proven Results says:

Steve Geller was the punk of the insurance industry which is why residents in Florida have gotten screwed needlessly for all his years in office with premiums.

That’s what Geller delivers to South Florida. You people are frigging idiots to vote for that guy. He’s a lobbyist lawyer that lives off his elected job and takes money on the side. Are you kidding?

  10. Tommy the Fry Cook says:

    For Truthiness:

The Broward AFL-CIO endorsed Geller. I heard it was even unanimous, but that may or may not be true. Either way, if you have teachers, plumbers, carpenters, electricians, phone workers, custodial workers, and everyone else all in the same room and GONEzburger gets dumped by a unanimous vote, I think that 100-1 endorsement ratio is pretty close to accurate. Sure as hell isnt 1-1!
