Updated Election Tidbits: Some Winners and Losers

BY BUDDY NEVINS

He’s back!

“That’s presuming I went away, says Bill Scherer, the downtown Fort Lauderdale powerbroker.

Scherer was counted out after being fired 2005 from his long-time political base as general counsel of the North Broward Hospital District.

Losing the job robbed Scherer of a font of political donations he could dole out from physicians and other district vendors. It was such donations that helped Scherer to be named one of George W. Bush’s Pioneers, those who raised more than $100,000 for the president.

Now Scherer is back as one of the very, very early supporters of Gov.-Elect Rick Scott.

When almost all the rest of the Broward GOP establishment backed Bill McCollum in the August Republican primary, Scherer was in Scott’s camp.

“It was very lonely back then, Scherer says.

Scherer and Scott have known each other for a long time.  Scott’s hospital firm HCA was a client of Conrad Scherer, the downtown Fort Lauderdale law firm.

“HCA was (the late) Rex Conrad’s biggest client, Scherer recalls. “(Then) I represented HCA when he (Scott) was CEO.

It’s been a hot year for Scherer, who has been in the media so often he has his own public relations counselor.

There was his case representing victims of Ponzi scamster Scott Rothstein.  He was a vocal member of the county’s ethics commission.  He just won a law suit that killed, at least until an appeal, the term limits for county commissioners.

Scherer equates his new found influence in the governor’s mansion with a ballplayer, whose batting average of .300 still means he fails at the plate two-thirds of the time.

“I’m a trial lawyer and I’m up at the plate every day, Scherer says. “Sometimes I hit one and sometimes I don’t.

With the election of Scott this week, Scherer hit one out of the park.

I get a lot of e-mail from readers obsessed with political consultant Judy Stern.

In their malevolent conspiracy theories, they see her as some sort of Superwoman controlling all politics in Broward from behind-the-scenes.

Tuesday’s election leads to the question:  How can somebody be Broward’s political Great Oz when they can’t even get their own daughter elected?

Barbra Stern lost to George Moraitis by around 62-37 percent in the northeast Broward state House race.

Ouch!

Moraitis was Kriptonite for Superwoman Stern

It was a Republican district.  Moraitis did have one of the best grass roots organizations seen recently (put together by his able wife, Heather). It was a Republican year.

Still, the loss should assure everyone that there is no Superwoman cape under Stern’s dress.

 Goodbye Roger Wishner.

After losing the Sunrise mayor’s race in the primary, Wishner got a second bite at the apple.  He went back to his commission seat due to a loopy ruling by City Attorney Stuart Michelson

Michelson did private legal work for Wishner in the past.

Wishner got bested by Larry Sofield, who had to leave his seat to make way for Wishner after Michelson’s ruling.

Another loser in all this could be Michelson.

His contract is being reconsidered and Wishner was his biggest supporter.  If I was Sofield, I would not be inclined to vote for the city attorney who threw me out of seat.

Guess who was spotted at the Coral Springs victory party?  Not by me, but by one of volunteers who took this photo.

    >> Still, the loss should assure everyone that there is no Superwoman cape under Stern’s dress.

Any word on a pair of big hairy balls there instead?

  2. Barbra and George did well considering says:

Democrats in East Broward gave up completely. George is one of the most amazing candidates we’ve seen. Barbra was a first time candidate in a Rep district in a huge Rep. year. She still matched or beat Skidmore, a 2 term Rep. She should be proud of her accomplishments and George Moraitis should be proud of his.

  3. Politico says:

Look what the “Stern factor” did for Angelo Castillo.

I wouldn’t say Stern was wearing a Superwoman cape under the dress.

Stern has been publicly “exposed” for her political campaign smears, misdeeds, lobbying activities, and just plain old political nastiness.

  4. Frank says:

    Hey Sunrise Comission,

We told you back during the “Dump Debacle” that we would remember. Please remember now that the citizens of Sunrise are watching you. The writing is on the wall and should be carefully read when considering the contract of that half million dollar CREEP city attorney you all hired. Mr. Rosen- you’re NEXT!

  5. Losers and Winners says:

Losers: Bob Norman and Broward Cleansweep. Despite their trying to help Phyliss Hope and Jaemi Levine with their negative attacks on their opponents, voters elected the better candidates in those races!

Winners: Buddy Nevins and Marty Rubinstein for seeing through the BS and telling it like it is.

  6. So Nixionian says:

THE BIGGEST LOSERS IN YESTERDAY’S ELECTION ARE THE FLORIDA TAXPAYERS.CONTRARY TO POPULAR BELIEF, yOU CAN CUT TAXES ALL YOU WANT BUT SOMEHOW YOUR EXPENSES ALWAYS RISE. AS IS USUALLY THE CASE THE BURDEN IS SHIFTED FROM THE STATE TO THE COUNTY TO THE CITY.lOOK AT YOUR PHONE AND OTHER UTILITY BILLS AREN’T FRANCHISE FEES A “cODE WORD” FOR TAXES. sO MORE OF THESE FEES WILL START POPPING UP. wANT TO MAKE MEANINGFUL CUTS IN EXPENSES,DON’T JUST FIRE PEOPLE UNTIL THE GOVT BENEFIT SYSTEM COLLAPSES OF ITS OWN WEIGHT,CUT PENSION BENEFITS, CUT TAKE HOME CARS FOR PUBLIC EMPLOYEES,HOLD VENDORS FEET TO THE FIRE ON THEIR BID PROPOSALS, ADOPT ANTI NEPOTISM HIRING RULES.REQUIRE LEGLISLATORS TO BE INDENIFIED ON ALL LEGLISTATION AND PORK PRODUCTS THEY PUSH FOR. HAVE A READLIY UNDERSTANDIBLE BUDGET PROCESS THAT PROPORTIONATELY DISTRIBUTES TAX REVENUES THROUGHOUT THE STATE. SO,CAN YOU NAME ANY POLITICIAN WHO HAS TAKEN OR SPONSORED ANY OF THESE ACTIONS AFTER NOVEMBER 2, OF AN ELECTION YEAR?? LASTLY,WITH A COMPLETELY REP. DOMINATED STATE GOVT, DO YOU THINK A JOE SIX PACK TAXPAYER STANDS ANY CHANCE OF A FAIR SHAKE, UNLESS HE HIRES A LOBBYIST?? UNFORTUNATELY, MONEY TALKS…. AND WE PAY THE PRICE FOR ALL THESE EMPTY WORDS AND PROMISES.

  7. City Activist Robert Walsh says:

Barbra Stern ran a great campaign. With The Republicans so charged up the odds where against her. Don’t get discouraged Barbra for your first time up at bat you did good. And to Chaz Stevens your a pig in plain English. What does Barbra’s mother have to to with her campaign? So big deal Chaz you took down Comm.Poiter-Some CNN commentator your not.The Community at large is very proud of you Barbie-always a next time…

  8. Broward Cleansweep says:

    @losers and winners
    Thanks for reading!

  9. Walsh, a math major you are not says:

By my count Robert there were about 63% of the District 91 voters that disagree that the community was proud of Barbie.

Barbara Stern was a phony and everyone saw through it. Not once (Israel), but twice now, Judy Stern has tried to hoodwink Democrat voters of this County to believe that being a long time Republican and then switching to become a Democrat to run, means that candidate is a true Democrat.

Judy had everything to do with the race. She was tapped by House Victory to find a candidate to run for that seat. When none of her friends would do it, Chris Chiari wanted to do it again and Judy threw up her newly minted Democrat daughter to run. The Democrats wasted tens of thousands of dollars on a candidate that was a BREC member not that long ago. Pathetic. Is there anything more selfish then Judy throwing up a crap candidate because she didn’t want to look bad because none of her friends (wisely) wouldn’t get in this race.

As Buddy reported previously, where did Stern’s campaign money come from? Momma Stern’s friends. That is why Judy’s name is linked here.

Barbara’s campaign showed how antiquated Judy Stern’s abilities to run a campaign are. Her first commercial dealt with Abortion, Environment and Schools. Maybe when Bill Clinton was running these were priority issues but with today’s economy they are not. Stern the followed up with a second commercial about the economy and used Republican Rick Scott’s line of “Let’s get to work”. I guess Judy’s creative juices don’t work as well as they used to.

Even worse was the Stern’s attempt to use Moraitas’ religion against him. God forbid anyone ever said anything about the Sterns’ being Jewish.

The best thing to come out of this race is that George won it clean. He did not engage Judy and Barbara in their mud slinging. George won big, most importantly he won with class.

  10. Give Me A Break says:

    @losers & winners:
Exactly how is a chump like Marty Rubinstein a winner? Wasn’t he joined at the hip (or should I say pocket) with Roger Wishner? Guess what – Roger is history, hopefully to never return. What a joke both of these bozos are.

  11. Losers and Winners says:

@Give me a break–the SB candidates he backed won, anyway. Too bad @Broward Cleansweep wasn’t as fortunate!

  12. Give Me A Break says:

    @Losers & Winners:
OK so Marty backed the SB winners but I seriously doubt that Marty’s pay for play “blog” had anything to do with either SB candidates win. Nan Rich’s daughter was a shoe in from the moment she announced her candidacy and Dave Thomas ran against a whacko.

  13. Bonnie Smith says:

Scherer is a pirate, but a good one, like Captain Jack Sparrow.

  14. City Activist Robert Walsh says:

Don’t talk to me about Att.Sherer. He takes Bill Telli on as a client. States just a neighbor, can’t find out what Sherer was paid for his services(pro-bono,my ass) Sherer had motive to help out Johnny Rodstrom and powerhouse Lieberman. They go up againt Judge Carol Armstrong Philips(more sir names than Elizabeth Taylor). Ok She rules term limits struck down. She should have excused herself due to the fact that her husband Former Jim Naugle could potentially run again(he was out -due to term limits. In other words can he run again?what about term limits that were just passed in Hollywood? out the door to. This Judge has cause major havoc. If her husband is allowed to run again she would benefit finacially.;Who cares if Naugle has no intention of running again (not the point) So big shot Judge Carol rules,County Att(Meyers) has until Nov.28 to file appeal. Keep in mind he’s running on the tight rope because the COmm. can oust him in a New York minute. So he has to be careful(understood)No way should we let them get away w/ this The voters spoke in 1992-wanted term limits,so Johhny boy and Goldielocks Lieberman would essentially be sent packing. Pack. Please do the right thing County Att. Office or get outside Council if you don’t want to be the bad guy. To my residents call the JQC in Tallahasee and report Judge Philps. This is so wrong on so many levels. I know no one knows anyone all just neighbors(rio vista mafia). I’m not afaird of any above mentioned. And no one knows Bill Telli(concerned citizen,my ass).Justice will be served,or it damn better be. And to all these negative comments about Judy Stern-say it to her face, and when she has you picking up your teeth off the ground, don’t say I didn’t warn you first. And to Barbie -you did good….

  15. robert walsh says:

In reference to my above posting I thought that Judge Philips should have recuse herself because this could have benefited her husband(jim naugle).I was wrong this only pertains to County again County Commissioners. But don’t be fooled just because her decesion doesn’t effect her husband. It just shows how influencial lawyers and there political friends can do just about anything. Judge Philips based her ruling on 2 state Supreme Court rulings in other counties(so what). I have asked John Rodstrom to send me a letter recommending that he give support to the County Att. to appeal Philips ruling. Its awful funny 6 months ago when I asked his(Rodstrom)Ast(Sue Smith) get this she knew Att.Bill Sherer was the attorney taking the case but had no idea who the plantif(BILL TELLI) was. Common sense would tell you if you knew Sherer was the Att. but did not know the plantiff-they pratically go hand in hand. I feel bad for the County Att. Office since he and Att.Myers(Appelate County Att)have to take direction and orders from the Commission puts both of them in a sort of pickle.Since Att.Newton is leaving at the end of the month,he could in my opinion care less(shame).Hang in there residents Dir. Of Elections, election Supervisor Dr.Brenda Snipes could appeal this ruling as well, and she doesn’t answer to the COmm. but more importantly the voters.Time is ticking they only have until Nov.28 to take center stage. Although Att.Meyers states he will have a decesion by Nov.12.So in a nut shell the County Att. have to take what the majority of the Comm. dictates what action if any should be taken. Please Comm.Wexler,Comm.Ritter,new ones Holeness,Lamarca and Shariff follow suit. Put Lieberman and Rodstrom out to dry. But not so fast I did request that Comm.Rodstrom show is support for this appeal-Stay tuned….

I love the picture of kraft and the fry’s. I was at that party, and I know what really happened. The Krafts were making rounds, and the fry’s were by themselves eating dinner. Look at how the fry’s were dressed, do they look like they were there for a political party??? The guy was wearing an old redskins shirt. I think this story is a bit of a stretch… Even for you buddy
