Busted: Eggelletion, Former Miramar Commissioner Salesman

 BY BUDDY NEVINS

County Commissioner Joseph Eggelletion and Former Miramar Commissioner Fitzroy Salesman have been arrested by federal agents, according to several sources and The Broward Palm Beach New Times.

Senior county staff notified some county commissioners earlier today with the news.

The arrests are part of a federal sting operation stretching back several years which sources say have caught several government officials on tape committing crimes including taking bribes.

It is not known at this point whether Eggelletion and Fitzroy were caught on tape.

Here is what sources have told me:

*The FBI has had a “sting” operation stretching back several years, targeting Miramar, several other cities and the Broward County School Board.

*FBI agents disguised as vendors in the contracting business attended fund raisers and charity events to meet city and county commissioners.

*The FBI, using confidential informants and their own undercover agents, bugged public officials with audi0 and possibly video.

Sources say as many as six to eight persons were investigated and may be arrested today.

Federal agents were reported in the Broward Government Center this morning, waiting for Eggelletion’s staff to arrive.  It is not known if any member of Eggelletion’s staff is suspected, but agents did not ask about any other commissioner, a source said.

The arrests are sure to shake up Broward government. There are already rumors that some of those being investigated are talking to the FBI, naming others.

Gov. Charlie Crist will have to name a replacement for Eggelletion once he is formally charged.

Among those being talked about as a replacement is lawyer Levi Williams, a Republican activist and member of hte Broward College board of trustees, and Albert Jones, a South Broward Hospital District commissioner.

Stay tuned.

Anxiously awiting to hear the rest of the names. There are so many caring politicians but then, as with anything, not just politics, there are always bad apples.
