Broward Health Physicians, Actress Raise Money For Biden

By Buddy Nevins

There was a time when most Broward Health physicians were reliably Republican.

Democratic doctors kept their mouths shut and their wallets closed at the public health system.

Not this year.

Some of the most visible physicians at Broward Health are behind a Zoom fund raiser this week for Joe Biden.

Because of Covid-19, the Zoom fund raiser can be more glittery. Hollywood actress and director Lea Thompson headlines.

Lea Thompson

Thompson is perhaps best known as Lorraine Baines in the Back To The Future movies. She also starred in films like All The Right Moves, Red Dawn, Some Kind of Wonderful, Howard The Duck and Jaws 3-D. She was the lead actor in her own  TV series Caroline in the City. And dozen of other roles.

In normal times, it is doubtful that Thompson would have traveled to Fort Lauderdale for this event.

The fund raiser is just too small, It will raise too little — thousands rather than hundreds of thousands — for a presidential race.

But in the age of Covid-19, Thompson can be added to the fund raiser easily.  She is just a Zoom call away.

The Biden event was organized by physicians at Broward Health, which has traditionally been a font of GOP campaign money. The public health system is controlled by a governing board appointed by Donald Trump-ally Gov. Ron DeSantis.

The host committee includes the chief of staff of Broward Health Medical Center and three former chiefs, the president of the Broward Medical Association and several of the group’s board members, and various other physicians.

Chair of the fund raiser is Dr. Warren Sturman, who once ran for Fort Lauderdale City Commission.

Also helping was Broward Mayor Dale Holness and other county Democratic pols.

Fort Lauderdale Commissioner Ben Sorensen is one of those pols listed on the host committee. Two years ago, Sorenson beat Sturman by 55 votes to win his seat.

Maybe there is a lesson to be learned in Sorensen and Sturman now working together.

Obviously those physicians have not learned the lessons of history about self-destructive behavior.

  2. City activist Robert Walsh says:

In regards to Sturman & Sorenson the expression comes to mind- Keep your friends close & your enemies closer.

The chance of me voting for Sleepy Joe Biden is zero. I’m not putting my name on this because I might end up in the operating room with one of these doctors!

  4. City activist Robert Walsh says:

Broward Health is not the only hospital network concerning getting involved w/ politics.Holy Cross on the opposite side of the spectrum( supporting Republicans etc) is Dr.Zachariah Zachariah Sr..Need I say more( 4th floor South & thanks to those that supported me).

  5. Hallandale Beach/Hollywood Blog says:

Lea Thompson, the one-time muse of so many American men my age, is also the mother of one of the most dynamic and popular young actresses on the entertainment scene today, Zoey Deutch.

From a great 2019 column by the amazing Amy Kaufman of the LA Times:

“I have a lot of friends with famous parents who, when they’re doing press, have their publicists say it’s off-limits to talk about their parents,” she says. “That never even crossed my mind. First of all, I’m too much of a loose cannon to try to censor myself. But I’m also not ashamed of them. I’m proud of them. I’m lucky to have parents that support and love and encourage me, and I have zero say in that privilege. That’s luck. But me being in ‘Before I Fall’ is working hard. I have no complex about that.”

  6. Count LF Chodkiewicz Chudzikiewicz says:

Holness Sturman n Sorensen are NO TALENTS as are every Democrat except Charlie Crist n Val Demings. Fried is a Gillum waiting to happen. Tbe Republicans are WRONG ON ISSUES but the DEMOCRATS RUN THE WRONG CANDIDATES.
