Broward Dems Booming Because of Obama
BY BUDDY NEVINS
Obama Fever has caused an unusual problem at the Broward Democratic Party: Where to fit all the new members at the monthly meeting?
Enthusiasm over President Obama has triggered a flood of activists flowing into the party organization.
Since last year, the number of committee member has more than doubled.
There were fewer than 400 before Obama. Today there are around 900.
The monthly Democratic meetings have already had to move from its long-time meeting place at Deicke Auditorium in Plantation. The party is temporarily meeting at the larger Tamarac Community Center.
Mike Moskowitz, Broward’s Democratic state committeeman, said Democrats are still searching for the perfect location.
Tamarac is a long haul for south Broward Democrats.
Add to this the newly expanded party management committee essentially the ruling Politburo of the local party.
“Our biggest problem is finding enough chairs for the management meetings, quips Democratic boss Mitch Ceasar.
The management committee will increase by five members.
This will be done by boosting the number of area leaders — precinct committee people who represent a section of the county — to 16 from 11.
“The number of precinct committee members has more than doubled. We feel it will bolster our active participation by breaking down our new larger organization into smaller groups, Moskowitz says.
Ceasar says the hardest job will be keeping the new activists enthused about candidates other than Obama.
“The party is more than the presidential election, he says. “We’ve got to win the city halls and the other local offices, too.
After easily surviving a battle for chairman late last year, Ceasar says he is encouraging the dissidents to stay involved.
He admits there are about four to five dissidents out of about two dozen Democrats on the management committee.
“If I wanted to get rid of these people, I would have. (Fort Lauderdale area activist) Ron Mills was against me. I could have made him invisible. Instead, he ran (for area leader) unopposed, Ceasar said. “Differences of opinion make us stronger.

I’m glad someone is booming because of Obama because the rest of us sure aren’t.

I don’t believe any of this. Mitch Ceasar would never do anything for the betterment of the party that didn’t put money in his pocket

Mitch Ceasar has been getting a bad rap from a handful of malcontents for years. He has improved the party by broadening its base and its number of activists. Let’s Hail Ceasar, not denounced him.
