Broward Commissioner Dale Holness: Ooops, I Made A Mistake On Sun-Sentinel Questionnaire

BY BUDDY NEVINS

Broward County Commissioner Dale Holness isn’t John Dillinger, Willie Sutton or even Willie Horton.

But Holness has been in and out of civil court numerous times, both as a plaintiff and defendant.

So when the Sun-Sentinel recently posted online the questionnaire he answered for the newspaper’s the Editorial Board, Browardbeat.com immediately spotted an error in his responses.

The query and its questionable answer, outlined in brown by Browardbeat.com, is below:

Dale Holness Questionnaire

Browardbeat.com contacted consultant Sean Phillippi, who is part of the Holness campaign. Our question:

“There are five pages in the Broward County Clerk’s office listing Holness as either the defendant or plaintiff in cases, including foreclosures and a paternity suit against him. Any comment why he answered, ‘No.’ to the question?”

Holness forwarded an e-mail stating a campaign worker made a mistake on the questionnaire and that he failed to correct it.

He then added:

“Yes, I have been involved with several civil actions regarding my real estate business. Since my last re-election they have been regarding routine tenant removals. Prior to my last re-election, other routine tenant removals and foreclosures from several decades ago represented an overwhelming majority of the civil actions. Others were divorce proceedings. There was a paternity action, which to this day baffles me because I have never denied paternity to my son and have always made sure that he has had everything he needs.”

He also forwarded the answer he wrote Browardbeat.com to the Sun-Sentinel. The newspaper’s staff  should have known about his court troubles because they wrote at least one story about them.

Holness is locked in a nasty race for re-election against state Sen. Chris Smith.  An earlier post on that race is here.

  1. Count LF Chodkiewicz Chudzikiewicz says:

Why can’t candidates do their own paperwork?

  2. Ha Ha Ha says:

That question is a bad one, because:

    1) It does not say whether it is asking about civil suits related to business activities (and in the real estate business those happen frequently), to personal matters, or both.

    2) Is a candidate’s love life really something that the Sun-Sentinel should be asking about? The question should clearly state that its scope is limited to civil matters that are potentially relevant to the job he or she is applying for. Divorce actions would not meet that test.

    FROM BUDDY:

I disagree. If a candidate has a history of bankruptcies, foreclosures and bad business debt, I believe the voters should know. After all, how are you expected to run the public’s business when you can’t run your own.

One divorce, not so much relevance. Six divorces, maybe relevant.

  3. Disgusted says:

Holness is a scumbag. He belongs in jail.

  4. Talks like a politician says:

Playing the part of devil’s advocate: What is the meaning of the word “defendant”?

Or, do his backers even care? Anything seems to go in the world of politics.

  5. Sunsentinel required reading says:

    Sunsentinel is a joke

  6. Knows for Sure says:

Chris Smith is going to crush Dale Holeness.

Debbie Wasserman Shultz has been hired to rig the election.

    FROM BUDDY:

Rig the election! You sound like Donald Trump.

First of all, where is the proof Wasserman Schultz was “hired,” which suggests she was paid. No proof? I didn’t think so.

Second, how would one “rig the election?” I would bet you don’t have proof of this allegation either.

What trumpeting (the verb is deliberate) the false allegation that the election is rigged does is dangerously damage trust in our democratic system of government. Will people soon be clamoring for a change in government? To Trumpism?

  7. Sun-Bankruptcy says:

funny that the Scum-slantinel is asking candidates if they have filed bankruptcy in light of their action doing so. I remember when they wrote bad checks to police officers working the city link beerfest and the cops had to go to the Mayor who had to call the Publisher to collect the money owed.

  8. Disgusted says:

Buddy…TRUST? Have you been paying attention to the O’Bama/Clinton cartel? I have never in my life distrusted what is supposed to be my/the people’s government the way I do now. The Constitution, truth and, justice be damned. I am not sure Trump is the answer, but I know the existing crime cartel must go.

    @2

Mr Nevers, buddy why are attacking the char-actor of this candidate? Realize the women that he was married to and subsequently divorced from were the ones with the issues, it’s not his fault that they were not able to get along with his girlfriends. I’ve dodged these bullets in my career as chief.

P.S. the truth is always a hard pill to swallow, even for a crusty news guy such as yourself.
