Baby Turkey For Broward In State Budget

BY BUDDY NEVINS

The news release from two legislators was routine.  It was about money they pried out of the state budget for Broward.

Local goodies stuck in the state budget are nicknamed “turkeys”.

In reality what Broward got is more like a poult.

The state budget: GOP turkey and Democrat’s poults

State Sen. Eleanor Sobel, D-Hollywood, and state Rep. Gwyndolen Clarke-Reed, D-Deerfield Beach, praised the Legislature for including $21,000 in the budget for Broward Schools’ BECON TV.

Yup, that’s $21,000.  The state budget is approximately $67 billion.

That’s what it has come down to in Broward.

Republican-rich counties did better.

More than $40 million were earmarked to build a new USF campus in Polk County.  That’s the home of Senate budget chair J. D. Alexander.

About $2 million went to the Sanford-Burham Medical Research Center in an area represented by House Speaker Dean Cannon.

Senate Pro-Tem Mike Bennet, R-Bradeton, got $5 million for a world-class rowing facility near Lakewood Ranch.

You get the picture.

I don’t know about the rest of the turkeys, but BECON is a worthy cause.  It is the only station which has Broward-centered talk and education shows.

So Sobel and Clarke-Reed deserve applause for finding money in tough times for a Democratic county.

All these turkeys still must be approved by Gov. Rick Scott, who has the power to veto any of them….including the tiny $21,000 for Broward’s educational TV.

Becon is a waste of money. They need to get rid of it completely, sell it to Nova and let Nova use it for their communications students. What purpose does it serve us?

  2. Floridan says:

What, if anything, did Republican Ellen Bogdanoff bring back to Broward?

  3. Wayne Arnold says:

I remember the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s when all of the Democrats controled both houses in the legislature + the Governorship. The Democrats got all of the choice offices and seating in the chambers. If we only had some “Conservative” thinking Democrats reaching across the aisle to get things done for the folks in Broward County and South Florida it might help in bringing home the bacon.

  4. Harold Turke says:

Becon needs to be ended. It is a frill that should be cancelled in favor of keeping money in t he classroom.

Buddy’s right, afterall, the School District doesn’t get ANY OF THE LOTTERY MONEY, at all, whatsoever!!!
It was all a disguise when they wanted it they lied to everyone about it as well. So why don’t the State Representatives and the State Senators ask about that??? It’s something for them to consider and ASK!!!
Now it’s just REPUBLICANS VS DEMOCRATS and what they want for themselves. They all act like they’re being CHILDREN instead of GROWN-UP ADULTS and what’s good for the kids in the Schools.
