Two Broward Reps Wrestle To Lead House Democrats

BY BUDDY NEVINS

Fellow Democrats are trying to stop State Reps. Joe Gibbons of Hallandale Beach and Perry Thurston Jr. of Plantation from squabbling over who will lead their party members in the House.

It is getting so bad that State Rep. Franklin Sands of Weston and Luis Garcia of Miami Beach were forced to ask Gibbons and Thurston to work out their differences.

Why anybody would fight to be the Democratic House leader is beyond me. It is kind of like being the coach of the basketball team that plays the Harlem Globetrotters.

For those who don’t know the Globetrotters, they are the team that has won 98.4 percent of the time in games fixed for their entertainment value, according to Wikipedia. The outcome of the Legislature is just as fixed as a Harlem Globetrotter game, with the Democrats as the losers.

Can I hear a little “Sweet Georgia Brown for the Republicans, who must be laughing over this?

The St. Petersburg Times’ political website The Buzz laid it out on their website today.  Here it is.

I know and like both representatives. I hope they work things out.
More importantly, I felt compelled to make an observation. It hasn’t taken Rick Scott long to show us he has no clue what he is doing.
Can you trust someone who spends $72 million of his own money to buy the Florida governorship? Obviously not. What a clown.

It is like two beggars fighting over scraps.

  3. Think About It says:

This is easy to figure out. Which of the two has the best shot of helping the crippled D’s succeed in an environment controlled by Republicans? Which of the two has the greater ability to get ANYTHING the minority wants done? That is the litmus test. Just add water, stir and serve.

    Dear Buddy:

The hapless team you’re likely thinking of is the Washington Generals. I think I saw them in the early ’70’s as a kid at the Miami Beach Convention Center, back when I used to go there for ABA Floridians games -and the old
    Dade-North Community College.

Any guess why the Florida news media, print & TV, other than Bob Norman, is giving carpetbagger Joe Gibbons the kid-glove treatment considering everything we already know?

My favorite line of prose from Bob Norman’s Nov. 15th column, below, is this simple gem: “On top of that, it doesn’t appear that Gibbons had a valid residence in his own district.”

So where, exactly, is the formal State investigation?

Question: Did Gibbons really write down on his formal candidacy papers -submitted to the State- an address he DOESN’T actually live at? Is it really too much to ask that our State Rep. actually live here, amongst us?

Two of Judy Stern’s boys cant place nice. Remember when Judy was in control and could have a handle on this stuff.
My vote is for Perry, I mean at least he lives in his District. Unlike Gibbons who allegedly lives in Hallandale while his wife and young children live in Jacksonville.

  6. Everyone knows its true! says:

Anybody wondering why Franklin Sands, the past democratic leader had to write this letter instead of Saunders, the current democratic leader?

    Here’s why:

There was a “little black girl” from Davie that ran against Jenne just a few years ago. She got the name “Black girl” from Jenne’s daddy when he was talking to rather screaming at Mitch Ceasar about “letting” her on the DEC.

The black girl from Davie was running against Jenne when SOMEONE (we all know who…) devised a plan to get her out of the race…AND he “mistakenly” voted for Saunders against Thurston. But, Thurston threatened to support the black girl from davie against Jenne. Therefore, Jenne had to protect himself and kiss and make up with Thurston.

Oh, I absolutely love Broward County. You just couldn’t make this stuff up…

I love both Gibbons and Thurston. But one of them has been dogged out by the democratic party more! The both would make great leaders but one DESERVES it more.

    Just sayin.

Would this be the same Joe Gibbons who represents Broward but doesn’t live in Broward, and who works as a Tallahassee lobbyist for Aikerman Senterfitt:
