Broward Politics: Retired Pol Says No To Mayor’s Job

Lois Wexler says thanks, but no thanks.

A former County Commission and School Board member, Wexler says she is flattered by those who want her to run for Plantation mayor this year.

“I’m absolutely not interested in the mayor’s position,” she told Browardbeat.com.

Wexler says she has been approached by a number of community leaders to run.

In addition to Wexler, political insiders have been floating a second veteran pols name for Plantation mayor — Mitch Ceasar, the former Democratic Party chair. Ceasar could not be reached for comment.

Mayor Diane Veltri Bendekovic, whose term is up in November, has not announced whether she will run again. Bendekovic’s indecision has kept other candidates out of the race.

After 12 years on the School Board and 12 years more on the County Commission, Wexler, 68, enjoys being retired. She is not interested in managing a city full-time.

Plantation’s mayor runs the city rather than a city manager.

It is not like Wexler has been sitting around doing nothing.

She is the chair of the Broward Behavioral Health Coalition, which is the local managing entity for state mental health and substance abuse treatment programs. She also works with a suicide prevention organization. Those volunteer jobs allow her free time.

Wexler concedes she is “toying” with the idea of running for another part time job — City Council.  She said that she is “appalled” by the current combative Plantation government.

Along with the mayor’s job, two of the city’s four council seats are up for grabs in the November election.

“I have the kind of experience that could be needed,” Wexler said.

The council only meets two evenings every month, rather than the mayor’s full-time job.

“I could handle that as a senior,” Wexler said.  And then she laughed.

I think she would be a force to be reckoned with in any elected office she desires.I hope she runs for commissioner. However, a better fit would be to run for mayor. She would win hands down..

  2. Stern Burn says:

Old Judy pulling out all her retreads.

Blake and Eric Johnson working for Dean Trantalis against Judy Stern candidate Bruce Roberts have show everyone the game plan needed to beat Stern. Rehash the Ster/Roberts/Bahia Mar conflicts and plug it into developments Stern is tied to in any city she is running a candidate. Then throw in the anti gay stuff the Heron Eco did to Dean. Game over.

Ps.Mrs.Wexler is also a huge advocate for Alzheimer’s awareness.Year after year she was there to deliver. This is one lady that can achieve any elected office she desires. She also looks good in red…

Why do we rarely get new, young, intelligent.people in.politics here or elsewhere?
Because who wants to put up with nonames attacking them while their own business n personal lives suffer.

  5. Cooper City Mom says:

Lois is one of the most dedicated public servants I have known – and I’ve worked with a lot. She is thorough and no-nonsense. She would be great on the Plantation City Council but she also deserves her quiet retirement.
