Gender Equality At The Sun-Sentinel

BY BUDDY NEVINS

I received an email this week from former Sun-Sentinel columnist John DeGroot with two words on the subject line:

Gender Equality.

The list below of Sun-Sentinel executives comprised the body of the email.

John DeGroot

Two of those on the list, Nancy Meyer and Julie Anderson, were appointed February 27 and replaced Howard Saltz, who was editor and publisher.  That was just in time for Women’s History Month, which is March.

The Sun-Sentinel talks the talk and walks the walk.

Julie Anderson, the Sun-Sentinel’s new editor

  1. Sex-sentinel says:

With circulation and revenue down, could they afford to hire males?

  2. Count LF Chodkiewicz Chudzikiewicz says:

Nearly EVERY NEWSPAPER n MANY NEWS PROGRAMS are promoting women AT SALARIES LESS THAN MALES AND NONE OF THE BENEFITS. In Europe Canada Australia New Zealand fewer women are promoted BUT WITH EQUAL SALARIES N BENEFITS.

male, female or martian still the same third rate trash. ny times wanna be

  4. William Santos says:

I have been a journalist for more than 35 years, including about two years (from 2013 to 2015) as an assistant editor with Forum Publishing Group (now called tronc), which is owned by the Sun Sentinel. I must mention in passing that the Forum newsroom was the most overtly and blatantly feminist office in which I have ever worked. While, as a man, I found it difficult to work there due to the clandestine (unspoken?) oppression of men there, I am not complaining. It was what it was, and probably is what it is. When I worked there, Forum was basically a mentoring facility for young, female journalists. Also, the editorial content was almost exclusively about the empowerment of females, which possibly may be due to readership. I have no reason to believe that tronc is any different. My point is that I would have liked to see something close to balanced coverage, but it was just not to be. I also worked as an editor for Forum for more than a year (from 1999 to 2000) as Sun-Sentinel Community News Group, and it was far more fair to the male employees, and the coverage was balanced. I do not know of the gender atmosphere in the main Sun Sentinel newsrooms, so I cannot and will not comment in that regard.

    FROM BUDDY:

William Santos worked at the Forum newspapers, the free community papers published by the Sun-Sentinel. I have no way of guaranteeing this is the same gentleman. If this is not the real Santos who worked at the Sun-Sentinel, let Browardbeat@hotmail.com know.

Santos does have an interesting point of view that you don’t see written often by journalists. These are not my views.

I would bet Mr. Santos has no chance of ever working at the Sun-Sentinel again.

  5. Hard working Anna says:

I just renewed my subscription to the S-S. Alas, I was born too late.
Let’s bust up that glass ceiling for our daughters.

  6. Sam The Sham says:

What a joke. You can rearrange the deck chairs all you want on the S.S.(Titanic) but it is still a one sided liberal rag just circling the drain.

  7. Just One Vote says:

The Sun Sentinel editorial board just endorsed Dean Trantalis for Fort Lauderdale Mayor. If he is elected I will subscribe for a year just to acknowledge their common sense.
