School Board’s Donna Korn Launches Re-election

Donna Korn, the maverick School Board member who walloped a darling of the Democratic Party machine last year, has opened her campaign for re-election.

A commercial real estate leasing agent originally appointed by Gov. Rick Scott in 2010, Korn refused repeated entreaties from Democratic leaders to switch parties.
Although School Board elections are nominally non-partisan, both parties actively seek candidates for the jobs. Party activists also campaign for candidate who are party members.
Democrats last year coalesced around former Florida House Democratic Leader Franklin Sands to oppose Korn.
With less than half the campaign money, Korn defeated Sands.
She won despite President Barack Obama’s huge win in Broward. And she won in spite of Sands’ inclusion on numerous Democratic palm cards, or endorsement sheets, handed out at the polls.
She remains one of two Republicans on the nine-member School Board. She has a reputation for using her knowledge of business and negotiations (She was the 2010 Top Deal Maker for Office Leasing presented by the Daily Business Review.) when casting votes.
In addition to a business background, Korn was a Western High School teacher is the mother of three children attending public school.
Former Miami-Dade principal Robin Behrman, a Democrat, opened a campaign against Korn, but dropped out earlier this month. School Board lobbyists and Democratic activists are now looking for a Democratic replacement for Behrman to oppose Korn.

She is the only School Board member who knows anything about business. She is not a rubber stamp for the staff and administration.
