Sam Fields Random Thoughts: Marlins Stadium, Waste At FIU

BY SAM FIELDS

I recently drove by the Marlin Stadium now under construction on the old Orange Bowl site.

The construction site is impressive…until you remember that it was built though backdoor politics leaving Joe Lunchbucket with 2/3’s of the bill.

Hopefully the Marlins will build a memorial plaque for the political career of former Mayor Carlos Alvarez. He was rightfully  recalled in large part for supporting this fiscal rip-off of the taxpayers.

It might remind the next fool in office to think twice.  That  includes anyone even thinking of financing a stadium with public money.

Our Tax Dollars At Work?

The Miami Herald on May 18th featured a full page color ad placed by Florida International University promoting Dr. Steven Oberbauer and his environmental program.

I assume that’s at least a $5000 ad, unless someone picked up the tab  for FIU.  For what?

It’s not like FIU does not have enough current and prospective customers–aka students.

It’s hard to believe that someone who is looking for a college with a strong environmental program will be searching for it in newspaper ads.

Is Obama An Atheist?

Asked to give the opening prayer in the Minnesota legislature, the good Reverend Bradlee Dean proclaimed that every President up until 2008 accepted Jesus as god.

This was a not too subtle shot at President Obama. The Republican Speaker of the House publicly apologized.

Not so fast.

I believe Dean was right about Obama.

Starting with his mother, I am pretty sure that Obama is an agnostic leaning to atheist. But he is a political animal who realized this view was politically untenable.

It is even more so in the Black community where belief in the supernatural in the form of Jesus is de rigueur.

Santorum: Tortured Illogic

If you thought former U. S. Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania’s  idea that he could be President was a joke his latest foot in mouth episode removes all doubt.

Senator John McCain, R-AZ, has consistently opposed torture/enhanced interrogation or whatever you want to call it.

Santorum has directly taken him on proclaiming:  “…[McCain] doesn’t understand how enhanced interrogation works.”

Really????

McCain spent almost six years the North Vietnam prison known as Hanoi Hilton successfully resisting “enhanced interrogation”.  It is doubtful that there is anyone who better understands whatever you want to call it.

Santorum’s experience with “enhanced interrogation” extends to “olive races”* when he pledged at a Penn State fraternity.

*For those of you not on Fields’ wave length, here is an explanation of “olive races.”

And, while you’re at the Urban Dictionary, look up the definition of ‘santorum.’

  2. Mary Dorato says:

Mr. Fields ignores all the construction jobs and permanent jobs that a baseball stadium creates.

I don’t know what is funnier- the fact that these items are “random” or that they are labeled “thoughts”.

  4. Stadium Smart says:

There are not many stadiums you can think of that were not built with some level of public financing. Stadiums are more than just buildings where sports activities take place. They help bring a community together through a common interest. They are iconic and help define urban areas. They offer a focal point through which national and international attention can be brought to a destination. South Florida can use all of those things. Long after the debt is forgotten, the structure will continue offering value to our area. It was good business to build it.
