Freedom Tower??? Hardly

BY SAM FIELDS

On April 30, 2012 America’s pride was restored as construction of the Freedom Tower, on the site of the World Trade Center attack, exceeded the Empire State Building.

Putting up the Freedom Tower compares to raising the flag at Iwo Jima.

It was a great day for America.

I’ll be damned if those goddamn camel jockeys will take our “freedom”. This construction job is our response to al Qaeda.  It’s pissing on Bin Laden’s watery grave. You can hear Toby Keith singin’ how he’s gonna put a boot up their keisters.

Government bureaucrats and politicians were contentedly smiling at “Nineteen Eight-Four”s Ministry of Truth where history was rewritten everyday.

I bring up the book by author George Orwell because the real truth is that the scumbags in al Qaeda were never a threat to our freedom.  They did not have to be.  Responding to their unconscionable acts we did it to ourselves.

At its height Al Qaeda never had more than 900 members. Hells Angels has ten times that many.  The Gambino Crime Family has 3000 “made members” and associates.   The Crips, Blood and a dozen Mexican gangs in L.A. have over 900 members.

Spending a trillion dollars and exhausting our military makes no more sense than making that kind of effort to stop the remnants of John Gotti’s organization.

The way they got Bin Laden, along with drones, is the way they should have gotten them all along. And the ones that were captured should have been put on trial in NYC in Federal Court.

Instead we did for them what they could not do to us.  In the name of protecting our “freedom” we cut back our standards for the Fourth, Fifth, Sixth and Eighth Amendments…in the name of protecting our “freedom”.

The Patriot Act and its related actions have trimmed our protections against the government getting into our homes and papers.  It ain’t torture if you can rename it “enhanced interrogation”. Warrantless wiretaps and searches of homes done in the name of protecting our ‘freedom”.

We set up secret military tribunals, not for what Al Qaeda, did but for why they did it.

If Al Qaeda had taken down the WTC to collect the building insurance does anyone think there would be a Guantanamo prison camp?  Not likely.

But because they did it for their wacky religious beliefs we eviscerated our own Constitutional protections.

The Bush and Obama administrations, with Congress cheering them on, have set precedents that will someday come back to take away yours and my freedom.

And what did we get in exchange? A building with a name that rings hollow.

It’s a great day…for The Ministry of Truth.

    Sam,

The drug war has done much more harm to our freedom and our 4th amendment jurisprudence than the war on terror ever has

The public will always buy the simplicity of a new building over the difficulty of understanding their rights are being taken away by the Washington crew of BOTH PARTIES.
