Update: Democratic Activist Busted For Theft

BY BUDDY NEVINS

Democratic activist Nick Steffens was busted by the cops on Tuesday on four counts of grand theft.

A Coral Springs lawyer and former Democratic committeeman from northwest Broward, Steffens surrendered and was booked into the main Broward County Jail.

Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer set his bond at $200,000.

The charges are detailed below.

He had already been suspended by the Florida Bar for misappropriating money from a law firm trust account. The criminal charges also appeared related to his law practice.

An earlier post on Steffens trust account problems  is here.

    You’re welcome Nik.

    FROM BUDDY:

It appears from the probable cause affidavit that Chaz Stevens had little or nothing to do with his arrest.

  2. interesting says:

Looks like the bar started looking into nick’s trust account right after he lost his race for school board. I wonder if Sean Phillipi will have to give back all the money he was paid from Nick to run the campaign? It seems like a pretty hefty pay day for a near last place campaign.. Looking at the contributions and expendatures, most of the money coming in and out of the campaign was from nick. I wonder if the authorities will look into the ECO’S they had together?

  3. Chaz Stevens, Genius says:

    Dear Stacy Ritter;

Nick’s your campaign treasurer (as of April). I’d make sure that little cretin didn’t take any petty cash.

  4. City Activist Robert Walsh says:

Chaz Stevevs once again. Waiting for you in Ft>lau Mr.Hethen. Ok this is unfortunate. Save yourself some time. Plead no contest. Have your Atty. go w/ three(3) yrs. probation, you sent up a payment plan, you pay back the victims etc, next….

  5. Fake Stacy Ritter says:

Nick, who? Nick Stephanie? Nick Steffens? Never heard of him. I never liked that kid, he was a friend of Russ.

  6. Sean Phillippi says:

Let’s correct the record on a few things @2. First, my last name is spelled Phillippi. Second, I have never been involved with an ECO. I had a Political Committee (PC), which is closed. My friend Nick was never a treasurer or deputy treasurer on the PC, so he therefore never had access to any funds in the PC. When Chaz first brought this subject up I sent him a direct message on Twitter with my cell phone number and told him I am happy to discuss the PC with him, and to date I haven’t heard from him. Anyone should feel free to call or email me if they have any questions about the PC. All of the records are public and online. I have no problem with anyone looking into the PC as I have nothing to hide. Also, what he is accused of all occurred after his run for office ended.

Nick is still my friend, and I don’t care that it isn’t politically wise for me to say that right now! He made some incredibly poor choices, and he is facing the consequences for his actions. I hope and pray that my friend Nick learns from his mistakes so that he can grow to be a better person in the next chapter of his life.

Even though I know exactly who #2 is, all you needed to do is ask your political boss for the correct spelling of my last name by the way, I will not engage with any anonymous poster. I don’t believe in kicking anyone while they are down like Chaz does, much less a friend, but at least he has the guts to post under his own name.

    FROM BUDDY:

I personally think it is honorable to stand by your friends.

  7. Count LF Chodkiewicz Chudzikiewicz says:

At least Mr Phillipi is a stand up guy! I think understanding and trying to help people who have made errors in judgement or bad choices is more helpful than “piling on”.

  8. For The Record says:

Nick Steffens was the Treasure of Stacy Ritter’s campaign for about 3.8 seconds (more like 2 weeks realistically). Nick was far deeper involved in Bob Mayerson and Lisa Aronson’s campaigns. Why isn’t anyone calling them out? Why is it only Stacy Ritter’s name the only name that gets tied to Nick. Again, her campaign utilized him much less than a lot of other people…

    FROM BUDDY:

He was replaced as Ritter’s treasurer months ago, but the supervisor’s office hasn’t scanned the information and posted it on the Internet yet.

  9. Sto says:

NIck please meet your prison wife Bubba

  10. Interesting says:

If you look at the bottom of the report, it says he has been put on a “Nebbia Hold,” which in legal speak means that whoever post’s his bond money has to show where every penny of that money came from. This typically happens for money laundering suspects and drug trafficking suspects. I am wondering if the State’s Attorneys Office is looking to add a money laundering charge to this or some type of amplifying charge that would really seal his fate.

    FROM BUDDY:

Maybe they want to make sure any bond money wasn’t part of the funds alleged to be missing from the law firm trust account.

    Only one?

    FROM BUDDY:

I personally think it is honorable to stand by your friends.

You have done a stellar job in covering up for the politically correct [both D’s & R’s] depending on your agenda, thank you Buddy.

  12. how it works says:

2/3 of the politicos in this down have forgotten they ever heard of Nick Steffens and the other 1/3 are saying the suspected he was bad all along.
