Sunrise’s Botched City Attorney Search Will Overshadow Future

 BY BUDDY NEVINS

Sunrise City Attorney Stuart Michelson has a problem.

Its not the generous salary that was handed him last June.  That contact is worth up to $432,000 annually, minus his expenses and the salary of an assistant city attorney Michelson hired to help him.

It’s the way Michelson was hired — a classic no-bid deal. Read the rest of this entry »

Fields: How I Saved $ On Electricity And Why FPL Is Wrong

BY SAM FIELDS

Once again the Public Utilities Commission and Florida Power & Light continue to look for a solution for an energy shortage that does not exist.

Simply put, we do not need to add one overpriced watt of electrical capacity to meet the needs of Florida for the next twenty years.  What we need is improved efficiency which is cheaper, safer and proven.

Fields: Deutsch’s Religion Biased Against Women

BY SAM FIELDS

Guest Columnist

Fields is a downtown Fort Lauderdale lawyer, political activist, outspoken atheist and sometimes contributor to Browardbeat.com.

Imagine if the Broward Democratic Executive Committee had someone running for Chairman who woke up every morning and religiously proclaimed that he was grateful to God that he was not born a Black man.

Confronted, he insists he is not a racist but merely following the word of the Lord.  And it is the word of God that requires him to believe that those of African descent should never hold the highest position.

What does he get?  One voteis own.

Yet if you substitute the word “women” for “Black” and make that candidate an Orthodox Jew, he gets a pass on gender bigotry.  Read the rest of this entry »
